Thoughtful Morning Checklist

This printable has the perfect morning routine to start your day right. You can check off each task for each day of the week, especially useful as your building your new habit. I've included my prefilled routine plus a blank printable so that you can discover and write your own!

My suggestion for a positive morning routine. Ideally, the first three tasks are done before your feet hit the ground:

  • Wake up on time - no multiple snoozes!
  • Drink a glass of water - set one on your nightstand before you go to sleep.
  • Morning brain dump - write out 1-3 pages of whatever is on your mind. This is the perfect time to declutter and clear out your brain so that you can get a fresh start. There's no structure, rhyme or reason; it's simply journaling your own stream of consciousness.
  • Yoga or another light exercise - here's a quick ten-minute morning yoga routine
  • Eat a healthy breakfast - something with fiber, healthy fats, and protein. 
  • Read something inspiring or meditate - such a perfect and simple way to give yourself an uplifting boost each morning
  • Write out your plans for the day - begin each day with direction, peace, and confidence.
  • Review your goals - write down and update what you want to accomplish each day.

Processing Negative Emotions

Being grateful and having a positive outlook on life doesn't mean sugar-coating bad situations. You're not an ostrich with your head in the sand, so don't gaslight your own emotions and experiences. It's okay and important to walk through difficult feelings. This printable will help you process these difficult or negative emotions.

  • What negative feelings do I need to allow myself to process in order to move on and have a wonderful day?
  • How can I accept this emotion rather than push it away?
  • What is this emotion called? Try phrasing as "this is anger" rather than "I am angry". 
  • Acknowledge and accept that emotion is present. How can I embrace difficult feelings with compassion, awareness, and understanding? What would I say to a friend going through this?
  • Remember that feelings are not permanent.
  • Now that I am calm, what triggered me? What caused me to feel this way?
  • Though we can’t control our emotions, we can control how we react to them.

Morning Brain Dump

The habit of writing a morning brain dump is SO freeing and mind-cleansing.

And simple.

All you have to do is use this printable to write out 1-3 pages of whatever is on your mind. Even if you start out with something like "I have no idea what to write but I know I need to write words so here are some words that just came into my brain."

SERIOUSLY. Just write.

There's no pressure to write perfectly because it's simply journaling your own stream of consciousness. This is the perfect time to declutter and clear out your brain so that you can get a fresh start to the day!

Gratitude List

When I first started the habit of making a daily gratitude list, I had no idea what to be grateful for, so I would write simple things like “grateful the sun came up”, “grateful for my pillow” or “I’m thankful for cupcakes” 

But you know what? Even though those might seem like silly answers, they were true answers and they got the mindfulness ball rolling. Some days my list still has simple things, like cupcakes, and some days my gratitude list is filled with really deep, meaningful and spiritual answers like,  “I’m grateful for every single experience that has led me to this exact moment in my life.” 

Some benefits of keeping a gratitude journal include:

  • less stress
  • less aggression
  • increased self-esteem
  • more empathy and compassion
  • better sleep
  • better relationships
  • better physical & mental health

When is the last time expressing gratitude and appreciation crossed your mind?
